TV Show. On its own it's [ju:], as in you and ewe "female sheep" and yew a kind of tree , which are all pronounced the same. In the examples below I'll group together the different spellings: the spelling of the vowel isn't the important thing, it's what consonant comes before it. It also has the y- sound the phonetic symbol [j] after the labial sounds , [p], [m], [f], as in beauty, few, pure, pewter a metal resembling silver , music.

In Britain, Australia, and such places, the [j] is also present after [n], so new, knew, nude. But in AmE the [j] is lost, so these are [nu:], [nu:d]. The [j] is never heard after [r]. It disappeared well over a century ago here, so no-one says r y ude, dr y ew any more. After a plain [l] it's almost always plain [u:] too, but there are a few old-fashioned people who might still have [ju:] in words like lute, allure, illuminate. Probably only BrE if so.

After [s] it's mostly disappeared, so super, suit now have [su:], but assume still has [sju:] for me, and resume has [zju:].

In a few words such as sugar the [s] has changed to the sound in she. Finally, after [t] and [d] the sound is plain [u:] in AmE and that little bit of eastern England. Well, the phonetics have lost me, but I have a California accent myself. Maybe I am kidding myself about noo and new.

Do the other west coasters think that new and knew are pronounced the same way? And do you pronounce knew as noo? I think new and knew are pronounced the same way.
